ALMANZO WILDER EDITORIAL - Old Becomes New
With less than a month to go before we release ALMANZO WILDER: LIFE BEFORE LAURA, at the Wilder Homestead in Burke, NY, the editorial is going really well. In addition to the beautiful images of the Wilder farm and some fun re-creations from sections of the Farmer Boy book, one of the things we think viewers will enjoy the most is the way historic photos and illustrations from Farmer Boy have been rebuilt and animated in order to give them an all new look. The choice to animate photos and illustrations became very appealing to us given that these images are not only few, but also very well known to those who love the books and legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder. We realized if we could offer a new way to look at well known images that we could bring new attention and interest to what those images show.
Next week our composer comes in to look at the documentary and decides where we’re going to put music. Unlike all the LHOP bonus content we’ve made for NBC and Imavision, in this program we will not have access to the beautiful themes composed by David Rose for the series…so we’re going to create an original score to provide the emotional under pinnings that will support our story.
I’ll keep you informed.

Thanks for the update Dean. Garth Williams’s illustrations are such a handsome accompaniment to Laura’s work that I’m glad to see that you’re working with them.
It sounds like all of you are putting together a wonderful documentary that Laura and Almanzo fans will be delighted to own.
Perhaps at some point, you would grant me a short interview on the making of the documentary for my Laura’s Little Houses blog - http://lauralittlehouseontheprairie.blogspot.com/
All my best!

Can’t wait to see it! I just checked out your Legacy Documentaries site. What a talented group you all are. I’m sure making a living documenting peoples’ lives and memories in such a spectacular way must be fantastic. I can’t imagine any job more rewarding (well, maybe painting Corgis…) I love good documentaries and historic books written with loads of focus on human interaction and personal stories. I love the works of Ken Burns and David McCullough (I must have watched the recent John Adams on HBO at least 5 times!) Your ‘Bonus Features’ on the LHOP DVD’s are really nice. They just leave me wishing there were more! Have a lovely week. -CS ^..^

Hi Dean,
I would have loved to work on a project like this one… Animating Garth William’s beautiful illustrations… Your “Almanzo…” doc sounds very exciting !!
About the LHOTP extras… Do you know if they will be released separately from the huge complete boxset with all the seasons ?
Thanks,
Eric

Thanks Dean,
I’ll keep an eye on that when the boxset will be released !
I don’t know if you are aware of that, but I wonder if the episodes from the new complete boxset will be uncut, or if it will be basically the same dvds already released…
As you may know, most of the episodes in every season have many scenes or bits of scenes missing (because the material Imavision used is from syndication material)…
I think it is such a shame (oddly enough the same episodes released in UK (Pal, region2) are uncut !!)…
I hope so much these flaws will be repaired in the new boxset.
Thanks,
Eric
